MAN SIDE TACKLE Vs. 5 TECH (man side)Base
Unblocked run through= Block guy who is on LOS. If LB
Comes from depth DE is most dangerous.
  •  Control Width
  •   5 Tech: Vertical Set ( 1 Kick/Possible repeat)
  •   4 Tech: Inside Set (Possible Return)
  •   4i Tech: Inside Set (Possible Return)
  •   7+ Tech: Vertical Set (3 Kicks

MAN SIDE TACKLE TECHNIQUE vs. 5 Tech with High Edge Speed Rush
  • The man side tackle will set for the Speed Rush (1) vertical kick (repeat if needed) and (2) drag your Post foot vertically to cover defender up with slight inside leverage keeping the shoulders square.
  • React to rush of DE.
  • If he takes a high edge speed rush continue to kick vertically to maintain slight inside leverage. Make him commit and determine the junction point.
  • The junction point is the point at which the defender will turn toward the QB (and the Tackle).
  • Knowledge of the junction point is important because the blocker’s shoulders should be parallel with the shoulder’s of the rusher when he turns toward the QB to prevent the outside shoulder from being grabbed.
  • Be in control at the junction; that is, the nose should be over the midline, the weight on the inside of the feet with more weight on the inside leg, and have equal ability to move back inside or continue kicking outside. This position must be maintained throughout the approach and at contact.
  • Punch the defender when you can “reach out and touch him.”
  • Once defender gets to the hip plane of the Tackle must run the defender up field maintaining inside leverage.
  • If the rusher has exposed his chest to the blocker as will often be the case he has converted to a high edge bull rush, then punch the chest with both hands.
  • Maintain a slight inside-out position on the rusher throughout the block, bull the buller and maintain the width of the pocket.

Tips to Determine Junction Point

  • If the rusher’s outside foot is back, he will usually make his inside move to the QB on the 1st ,3rd or 5th step. Be ready to get shoulders parallel to rusher’s shoulders when he begins his 3rd stepor 5th step.
  • If the rusher’s inside foot is back, he will usually make his move to the QB on the 2nd step or 4th step. Be ready to get shoulders parallel to rusher’s shoulders when he begins his 2nd step.
  • NOTE: If the rusher’s backbone is pointed in rather than upfield, the above does not apply
MAN SIDE TACKLE TECHNIQUE vs. 5 Tech with Inside Rush
  • If defender rushes inside, POWER step after initial set and flatten rusher to the inside.
   1st step – Kick Vertical
   2nd step – Drag Vertical
   3rd step – Power Lateral
   4th step - Slide Lateral
  • Deny inside penetration.
  • Don’t “bail out” dropping the inside foot and having the inside arm collapse creating a soft inside shoulder.
  • Have a rigid inside arm and think in terms of tripping the defender with the inside foot.
  • You may be required to turn this into a drive block to deny inside penetration.

MAN SIDE TACKLE TECHNIQUE vs. 4 Tech INSIDE SET (possible return)
  • Power step inside to take away inside.
  • Get nose to inside number alignment.
  • Don’t overset to the inside because the rusher can easily rush outside from a head up alignment.
  • If the defender goes inside or outside and execute the techniques previously outlined.

MAN SIDE TACKLE TECHNIQUE vs. 4i Tech INSIDE SET (possible return)
  • Power step to the inside, denying penetration. Jam the ball of the Post Foot into the ground, and slide the Kick Foot.
   1st step - Power
   2nd step - Slide
  • Don’t take too big a power step. The defender may make an outside move from an inside alignment.
  • Continue power stepping and sliding to flatten the rusher.
  • Don’t “bail out” by dropping the inside foot and having the inside arm collapse creating a soft inside shoulder.
  • Have a rigid inside arm and think in terms of tripping the defender with the inside foot.
  • You may be required to turn this into a drive block to deny inside penetration.

MAN SIDE TACKLE TECHNIQUE vs. 7+ with High Edge Speed Rush
  • The tackle will Vertical Set for 3 Kicks
  • The tackle’s outside foot will remain on a vertical line for 3 to 5 yds
  • This means that the blockers outside foot much remain on a vertical line for these specified distances before allowing the defender to close toward the QB. By keeping the defender working up field for these distances, the blocker will be able to push him past the QB once he starts to close on the QB
  • If the defender is not forced vertically for certain distances, they will have a path to the QB
  • All things discussed previously about junction point apply to 7+ Tech
MAN SIDE GUARD RULE: BASE TO INSIDE
  • Control Depth
  • Set to slight inside target (cover ‘em up)
  • Tight 3: Lateral Set
  • Wide 3: Kick- Sink (snap) (be patient with hands)
  • 2i or 2: Inside Set
  • 0: Inside Set
CENTER ON SLIDE SIDE = 1st OFF BACKSID
  • VS. 3/5 on Slide side
  • Center sets and A Gap LB drops and 3 Tech does a speed rush on the guard. Center need to hang in space for count and then go knock the guard off the 3 tech.
  • Put right hand out to help guard on shade. Your eyes go to 3 tech and BSLB. If A gap backer runs through then he is 1st off backside. (vs. 2i center do not set with as much body pressure.
  • If 3 tech pinches into A gap then that is 1st thing off backside.
BACKSIDE GUARD =2ND OFF BACKSIDE (eye read progression 3, DE, ILB, OLB)
  • Stop speed rush. You know you have help inside from center. If 3 tech goes inside carry him with your right hand to center.
  •  When 3 tech goes inside it is no longer your responsibility, you can sit on it but you need to snap your eyes to DE, if he spikes he is yours (2nd)
  • If DE comes across your face you have to carry it.
  • If 3 tech spikes and DE speed rushes. Look at LB”S.
UNBLOCKED RUN THROUGH
  • If LB comes from depth make the LB run to get home on the QB.
  • If LB walks up in to gap (A or B) we must make a squeeze call.
SLIDE SIDE (SHADE/5) CENTER
  • Pre snap shade is your 1st off back side. If he spikes across he is yours 1 on 1.
  • NO ONE IS LOOKING FOR HIM FRONTSIDE.
  • If backer walks down and blitzes A Gap, Center and guard have to work it.
SLIDE SIDE (SHADE/5) BACKSIDE GUARD
  • Scan your eyes are on the ISLB to DE. Right hand for body presence. Do not step to shade leave your right hand there and leave your right foot in place to help center with speed rush.
  • LB pops he is 2nd off backside
  • If DE spikes he is 2nd off backside.
  • If no LB pop - guard do not let the space between the tackle and yourself get to big. Keep body presence for center but be ready to help tackle on DE.
BACKSIDE TACKLE
  • Stop speed rush. If he speed rushes block him.
  • If DE spikes in, look wide for corner fire or SS fire.
  • No fire step back in and help for tight scrap.
  • Tackle you can always release the DE but never release a 2nd rusher that crosses your face. Do not kick for widest rusher every time.
ODD FRONTS, STACK CALL PLAY SIDE TACKLE
  • DE speed rush you got him
  • Fan Call
BACKSIDE GUARD
  • Nothing changes DE to LB pop. No LB comes sit with body presence and help tackle if needed.
  • Fan Call.
CENTER
  • LB try to work outside you need to slide out and take him.
  • Slide to inside half eyes on LB.
PLAY SIDE GUARD
  • Slide to outside half
PLAY SIDE TACKLE
  • Base set for speed rush.
