Wing-T Offense Philosophy

We begin the philosophy section with defining "What is Defense."   We must first define defense to better understand what we are trying to do with Wing-T.

Defense is basically 4 things.

 1. Sight
2. Recognition
3. Anticipation
4. Reaction

1. The defenders on defense first use their sight to visually see the offensive look, the formation.
2.  They recognize the formation from what the coaches have told them and/or film study.
3.  Then the anticipate what the offense is going to do - run or pass or run strong or weak.
4.  Then the defenders react when the ball is snapped.

The Wing-T is designed to make the defenders THINK.  So the offense will change formations, shift, motion, use misdirection, use option football, change the pace and spread the field in an effort to make the defenders on the field think.  To use the defenders' sight and recognition to make them think before, during and after the snap to slow their reaction just enough to give the offensive players more of an advantage.

Some of the other principles of Wing-T:

1. Change of pace
We change the pace of our plays with the slower developing buck sweep and belly cross block to the faster pace guard trap, triple option and toss.  We also change the pace in our pass game with our bubble screen passes and our 5 step drop back packages.  This also includes for us our change of huddle and no huddle tempos.

2. Formation integrity
We utilize 6 basic formations (2 back wing, 1 back wing, trips, double slot, 2 back slot and unbalanced) and within each formation we are able to the run the ball inside, off tackle and the perimeter - strong and weak - as well as pass the ball.  Giving balance to each formation and not allowing the defense to cheat or anticipate where the ball is going by formation or backfield set.

3. Three back run oriented - 3 deep receivers fast
With the wing-T you have the ability to run strong or weak with any of 3 backs or run 3 and 4 vertical routes upfield fast.  This spreads the defense out and forces them to defend with width and depth.

4. Balance of passing - compliment with a pure passing attack
The pure passing system you combine with wingt's run game and play action pass game is limitless. You can use a west coast system, a spread system, the texas tech or Mumme system,  or  a quick game system.

5. Spread skilled responsibilities - with the ability to highlight the gifted one
Wing-T starts with "w" which means "we" and the ability to spread the ball around to the TB or Halfbacks or TE or WR is a strength and harder to defend.  However, if you have a great one the system is able to highlight him and get him his touches.

6. Small package of plays - which are run from multiple sets
We discussed the 6 basic formations that can be altered numerous ways to have or 25 or so formations.  You add shifting and motion and you will get 100's of different looks.  Then we run a small package of plays from these formations which is easy for us and difficult on the defense.

7. Shifting of formations
     Creates flanking angles
     Limits def adjustments
      Destroyer of recognition
      Cadence Variables

8.  Shift - 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters
We shift from beginning to end of the game.  We believe even if the defense adjusts easily that it still makes the defenders think as the play is about to develop.

9. Use of motion, 1, 3, Jet and extended motions
We will use motion to adjust and change the formation. This is  important because this changes the look for the defenders on the field at the last minute.

10. Series Football
The is wing-T football.  With series football we can attack different points with the same action.
This keeps the defenders honest and keeping gap control in the utmost importance.

11. QB additional threat to keepside (attack flank) or QB Bootlegs away - run/pass option
These threat to the defense makes the defensive end keep contain every snap and puts his seal and contains responsibility in conflict.

12. Develop defensive assignment conflicts
Wing-T attacks defenders with dual assignments - developing assignment conflicts - for example defensive end who has seal and contain assignments or support and cover from the strong safety.

13. Offense creates horizontal lanes
The plays will have a block in the hole, out at the hole and through the hole. Creating horizontal lanes.

14. speed - begins with you - racehorse mentality
We use a racehorse mentality to teaching.  We mass teach all the techniques and drills and  reps reps and more reps.

15. Extreme width and extreme depth
We will make the defense defend with extreme width and depth of the field.  This makes the defense have to spread the field and be sound.

16.  Option football
We believe in option football - we will utilize waggle, keep pass and bootleg - for run pass option.  We use double option like trap option, down option and belly option and triple option.

17. Multiple faking areas - unrecognizeable
The wing-T provides confusion and misdirection with multiple faking areas to keep the defense guessing and "thinking"

18. Attack strength - smart
One of our principles is to attack the opponents strength.  We are smart when we do this - but it is like saying to your opponent "this is your strength and we just dominated it"  When don't do it all day but
since it is their strength for a reason.

19. Exploit weakness
We make most of our hay by exploiting the weakness of the opponent.
